Battle of the burger chains

By Emily Ainsworth

In the sizzling world of fast-food franchises, a mouthwatering battle is brewing.

According to latest data from Statista, McDonald's and Hungry Jack's have emerged as the reigning burger franchises in Australia, with Maccas boasting the highest brand score index value across the country's QSRs in 2023.

Statistics show McDonald's is the king of brand recognition and real estate, boasting the highest number of all burger franchise outlets nationwide in 2023 and more than double the number of stores than Hungry Jack’s.

Yet when it comes to value for money, a 2023 survey revealed a surprising upset. Australian consumers, by a narrow margin, declared Hungry Jack's the victor in the value department. Plus, in a 2021 taste test, the Big Jack surprisingly dethroned the Big Mac in all categories – taste, ingredients and value.

But hold the mustard because this isn't a two-patty fight. Grill'd, the popular Aussie burger chain, also keeps its foot in the door of the nation’s burger market due to its extensive variety of healthy options and highly-rated dine-in experience.

As if the burger battlefield wasn't crowded enough, rumour has it that international heavyweights Wendy's and Mr. Charlie's are gearing up to enter Australia’s fast-food market, bringing their own unique flavours and tactics to the table.

Buckle up, burger lovers, because the battle for patty paradise is far from over. May the best burger franchise win!
